One of the most emblematic places of the Costa del Sol is La Carihuela, old fishermen’s quarter, which today is one of the most frequented by tourists due to its wide range of entertainment and dining services. The beach is very popular and appreciated by the festive atmosphere that reigns and the possibility of a delicious feast of ‘pescaíto frito’ (fried fish).
Located southwest of Torremolinos downtown, La Carihuela beach is around 2 miles from Marconfort Beach Club Hotel and 1,5 miles from Marconfort Griego Hotel. If day is not too hot, it’s a pleasant stroll along the promenade, past El Bajondillo beach and passing the urbanization that occupies what was formerly the English Castle or the Castle of Santa Clara, first tourist hotel in Torremolinos.
The beach is dark sand, about 1,5 miles length and 120 feet wide and there are many ‘chiringuitos‘ or stalls. During the day there are hammocks for hire and lots of typical bars to eat in, they are on the promenade and the neighborhood (here, like everywhere the most expensive are the nearest to the beach). At night, beach bars offer entertainment, sometimes a bit racy. At these hours kids are better in bed.
Without doubt, the best of this beach is that, one step from the sea, the traveler can find all kinds of services. Eat ‘pescaíto or seafood in one of its typical bars is a kind of a must ritual, however there are many international restaurants, burger, kebab, English-style pubs, etc.. The range of choice is not indifferent.
Only in winter this can be considered a quiet zone; in Summer nights La Carihuela is full of music and drink, a place to meet people.
History lovers travelers should know that La Carihuela has remained a little apart from the development of Torremolinos until the tourism boom of the 50′s. There are still some of the small fishermen’s houses, as a silent tribute to a past where the locals lived exclusively on the sea. So, how could it be otherwise, the church of La Carihuela is dedicated to Our Lady of El Carmen, patron saint of sailors and fishermen, and contains the image that is taken in procession out of marina in July.
Do not forget to visit La Carihuela. One of the interesting and fun things to do in Torremolinos.
